Rooted: Grounded in Love

For our fall teaching series we'll be walking through the letter of Ephesians. Many would say that this particular letter is the crown of Paul's writings. It's depth and richness is certainly profound! More practically, for our world today, which is riddled with chaos, brokenness, and division, this letter from Paul to the people in Ephesus is quite possibly the perfect reminder of who God is and what He has done to bring people together. It's also the perfect reminder however, for how we as Christians are called to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which we've been called.

Why is it called ROOTED? That's a great question! The book is broken into two parts, but nestled right between those parts is one of the most powerful prayers in the Bible, where we are called to grow deep together, being ROOTED & grounded in love. Notice the words below...

For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.

While Ephesians is filled with awe-inspiring truths that intersect with the struggles and challenges of life, it would be to our detriment if we removed such a book from the actual life of Paul. Paul told the people in Corinth "I urge you, then, be imitators of me. That is why I sent you Timothy, my beloved and faithful child in the Lord, to remind you of my ways in Christ, as I teach them everywhere in every church." (1 Corinthians 4:16-17) Yes, Paul was rich in theology, but at the core of that richness was also a way of life that he learned from Christ and wanted to pass on to others.
